You could also try lupines. They do well in cooler areas and shade, although they do require a little sun.
+1 on the butterfly bush vote. If they grow in your area, they will be loaded with butterflies by mid-summer!
My #1 all-time favorite is the gardenia. Rounding out the top 5 would be plumeria, hydrangea, hibiscus, and tulips... I think. It's hard to pick even a top 5 list.
