The best natural solution I've heard is to lay some ammonia around the edges of your garden. The smell deters them from entering and doesn't harm them at all.
I'm going to have to agree with Woodenboatboy. With your size garden, I think it would probably be more helpful just to rent a tiller when you need one. You have access to a bunch of different tiller...
I know it's well after the fact but I really hope you didn't use treekote, OP. I've only ever heard bad things about it. Bernie's suggestion to get a service team involved is really the best bet.
