Default Poplar Suckers

Hello - I have a large poplar tree, built a 6 foot diameter bed around it, and then put recycled asphault around the bed - the tree is in the middle of our driveway. I have suckers emerging from the asphault. I don't want to kill the tree, so round-up is not an option...how can I get rid of the suckers?

You can't I'm afraid. I maintain a few properties with this problem, all you can do is keep cutting them back when you see them.
Poplars are just one of them trees that is made by nature to continually sucker.
When I do my strimming I also strim down weeds and suckers on hard surfaces. This just keeps them in check until the next time.
